Why is it that the minute a priest of any denomination gets up on his back legs to speak, I just know that he is going to say nothing of any import?
Priests are so far removed from daily life that they have neither sympathy for nor an appreciation of what the people he is talking at endure each day.
This situation has had millennia in which to develop – all the time, in fact, during which there has been any sort of theism – and it has not grown by accident, it has been a deliberate corporate decision, part of a hugely successful business plan.
Probably the very first “priests” were members of a tribe who could not contribute well enough to the tribal resources. Maybe they were crippled or malformed – whatever prevented them from making a physical contribution to the tribe, it did not stop them thinking. Probably they saw an opening for seers or intercessors with nature. The native cunning of desperate people would have soon identified that there was a huge demand for divine intervention in all aspects of life. A boy child was needed. A good hunt was needed. A better cave was needed. Protection from the weather was needed. Whatever was needed, the intercessor would create a routine to convince the tribe that he was “in touch” with the gods and would try to ensure the satisfaction of the need.
Before the intercessor had made a single attempt to influence fate, he already had invented his “get out of jail, free” card by declaring that “the gods work in mysterious ways and a refusal is only an indica tor that they had different plans”. Of course, he was happy to claim success when his intercession seemed to have produced the desired result.
This basic model of the priesthood is still the same today.
Priests claim to be in contact with god and that their prayers are powerful. There are millions of soldiers who, throughout the ages, have been slaughtered despite the “powerful” prayers of the priests. A possible reason is probably that the priests of the opposing armies had been praying to the same god.
The status that came with being able to intercede with the gods became like a magnet to every greedy incompetent in the world. In what other profession is it possible to avoid all blame by simply claiming to be the conduit to god but with no power to compel the gods into action? The priesthood has become the number one resort for all those people who can do nothing else but lie. They require no qualifications apart from the ability to absorb and broadcast magical tales of mystery, justify the massive injustices in the world and claim to have absolute knowledge denied to ordinary men.
There is not a single religion that has poor priests.
The priests are not poor because they can obtain anything they want by convincing believers that it is a good idea to donate to the priest and receive a blessing in the after-life.
The after-life is the main key to the wealth of all organised religions. The after-life is the product that enables priests to acquire their massive wealth. Priests can make a lot of money selling god but they can make far more by selling eternal life. A huge fortune was made by all the Christian churches by the sale of indulgences. By using the sins of mankind as the bar to eternal life, priests could ask whatever they wanted for a small token to show that the sinner had been forgiven. The most evil of crimes against humanity were routinely “forgiven” by priests in return for vast sums of money.
So important is the after-life that the priesthood is almost uniquely responsible for just about every war that was ever fought. Their bleating about the “sins” of the non-believers and their contamination of the population have long been all the reason a despotic OR devout monarch has needed to launch wars of attrition. The results of these wars ALWAYS include massive rewards for the churches or religious organisations. The most valuable of all assets gained by the religions is the land upon which their places of worship stand.
There is no doubt in my mind that organised religion has become a major blight upon society. Religions are taught and controlled by people who will never be called upon to fight but who will insist that everybody else does. They are also of the opinion that whatever ails the secular society will not affect them, unless, of course, it will be to their benefit.

For a long time, my copy of “The Passion of the Christ” has sat on a shelf and gathered dust. So many reviews had slated this film that it seemed that watching it would be a waste of time and effort. Having fallen and partially immobilised myself, it finally has had a viewing.

WHAT A REVELATION!

Mel Gibson has produced an horrific film potraying the evils that come with a demented priesthood, an occupational army without sufficient numbers of troops and the mob mentality that demented priests can engender. As an historical representation of the times, the film appeared quite credible. Mob rule created by the fear of the priesthood that it was in danger of losing a very lucrative industry was illustrated in a subdued but effective manner.

The pathetic washing of hands by Pilate was an eloquent illustration of the sheer incompetence of a ruling force to ensure that due, legal process was followed.

The scourging of Jesus by two hulking Roman centurians was just a little drawn out and lost it’s way because the scene simply didn’t seem to know when it was finished.

The eventual journey to Golgotha was a tour de force and brought out the best in the principal players. The total disregard for the value of human life and the massive indifference to the suffering of a fellow human being by the crowds of on-lookers was something of a revelation and bore some resemblance to the modern day indifference of “rubber neckers” at the sites of human tragedy.

My feeling, after watching the film, was that it was a reasonably accurate depiction of the events. Certainly, more than lip service was paid to the stories to be found in the Bible but it left me with an answer to a question I have been asking for some years.

I am now fairly sure that Jesus was not sent to earth in order to “take upon himself the sins of all mankind”. It seems clear to me that ONLY contemporaries of Jesus were to be saved. Seeing the written word performed shows that the words of Jesus were addressed to those people in His presence. The breaking of bread and the drinking of wine at the last supper was not invoking that activity for all time but was an intimate act between close male friends. The obvious misogyny of Jesus and His followers was the final indicator that there was a huge, empty rift in the teachings of Jesus. Jesus came to Earth to be an example and a teacher – a DIVINE example and teacher – and yet he adopted the belief of his contemporary males and taught the second class position of females.

This, out of all the contrary and disappointing aspects of the teachings of Jesus on Earth, double under-lined his true mortality and lack of divinity.

At the creation, God made men and women as living souls from the dust of the Earth without assigning superiority to either sex. If there really was a serpent that tempted a woman to eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge, wasn’t that just a little too convenient for misogynyst philosophy?

Wasn’t the story of Adam and Eve a mere contrivance by a greedy and corrupt priesthood to allow men to subjugate women?

There are some people who should not drink alcohol – I am one of them.

Alcohol can be a massively injurious substance but can also create lucid dreams that make perfect sense and which are often the sources of the revelations claimed by holy men.

In small doses I have found that my thought processes and intuition are very much sharper and it is not unusual for answers to questions to present themselves under the mild influence of a small glass of beer.

Last night I had been involved in an animated debate on why Jesus came to earth when He did. We all made the decision to accept that He was sent by God and that the timing and location was not pure accident but a deliberately calculated event.

This afternoon, having mistakenly had a glass of beer I found that some of the many wild postulations from the debate became less amorphous and, indeed, agglomerated to create a very reasonable hypothesis.

If we look at the world 2,000 years ago, we find that only in the Middle east was there a slight vacuum in the God zone.

Although Egypt appears to have gone the route of monotheism, the Jews were having serious issues with their Elders as to what they were supposed to believe in now that they were freed from slavery but God seemed to no longer walk upon the earth.

Europe was a seething mass of worshippers of many gods who, represented by a very efficient and very wealthy priesthood, were believed to influence all aspects of life. Some of these gods were also credited with writing the life story of each person at the time of his birth so that no action by any individual could impact upon what the gods had already decided.

The east had a long history of ancestor worship and a belief in an afterlife that was little different to life on earth.

The South American continent was unknown to the rest of the world and the many gods worshipped there were, again, served by a very strong and wealthy priesthood, did not present a very fertile field in which to sow the seed of a new religion.

The North American continent was also unknown to the rest of the world and was replete with gods representing the natural order of things and served by a benign priesthood that enabled true worship by interpreting dreams and calling specific spirits to the aid of the tribes in times of need.

Australasia was also unknown and also had very deeply held beliefs in the ancestors and the circle of life.

The Middle East was really the only available place. It was awash with prophets and false messiahs and structured religion was being assailed by the Romans who seemed to have a god for all occasions and eventualities.

It was as though the area had been designed to be a fertile field for a new seed to be planted in – and maybe that is how God works. Who knows?

Those of us who look at the story of the nativity and what happened thereafter and try to decide what went wrong, are left with a very strong feeling that the people who wrote the story of Jesus lacked imagination.

If you are going to have a carpenter in a non-consummated marriage accept that his wife was visited and impregnated by a spirit without demurring, would it not have made sense to ensure that the traditions of the time were respected in the tale. Joseph was of a tribe that valued male children and was wildly jealous of the few women that were available for marriage. How did Joseph manage to win and wed a virgin? Much is made of how humble Joseph was and yet this first mystery is never explained.

Once you have got the virgin pregnant, how come she is still a virgin? The Bible is very coy about the visit of the Holy Spirit but all the indications are that the impregnation was by the usual process and that would have ended her virginity. This has to have more to do with tradition than any sort of reality.

Buddha, Krishna, Odysseus, Heracles and Zarathustra were born to virgins, as were many other gods – if you are going to create a new god, it must be better to keep to the stories people are familiar with.

Once the baby is born, angels appear and announce His birth to shepherds watching their flocks. This is a bit far fetched but it is a nice way to introduce the common touch – the first people to hear of God’s birth on Earth were ordinary working folk. Then, of course, we have the three kings or the three wise men following a star to find the baby. This star settled directly over the stable in which Jesus lay. This takes a lot of believing. Look at the night sky and try to decide what house any perticular star might be directly over – it isn’t possible. Since we now know that stars are massive fire-balls, we also know that there is no way that a star could be seen to hold it’s position over a specific building without incinerating all within it. Maybe “star” is one of those translation errors that needs to be corrected?

Accepting that these three men did find the child, and accepting that they did present him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, how did the family manage to disappear from the social calendar? These gifts would have made Jesus and His family tremendously wealthy by their own standards and yet they disappeared from public view until Jesus was a grown up.

During this period of achieving adulthood, Jesus would have been familiar with the many people claiming to be the new messiah. The one who was to bring the lives of people back to their former glory. Did He actually spend his growing years studying the false messiahs so that He would not make the mistakes that were getting them crucified?

It is no accident that Jesus was produced in a world populated by godlessness and extremes of misogyny and homosexuality and yet He is presented as a man of His times. He is a misogynist and fails to appoint women to profess and witness His teachings. He is presented as the saviour and yet He allows slavery to continue and does not preach against it. He does not preach against the suppression of minorities and women – indeed, Jesus is presented as having the same social outlook that has since earned the somewhat derisory name of male chauvinism.

The only conclusion that I can draw is that Jesus’ appearance on earth at the time claimed is that it was propitious. A vacuum needed to be filled and a greedy priesthood filled it.

In their haste, the priests forgot that they were promoting a loving God while preaching the most savage deaths to those who refused to believe.

I don’t often try to defend myself against stupidity and lies but the latest example of resorting to being offensive towards me because I happen to say exactly what I mean is really well beyond the pale. To be blunt, I am sick and tired of being the whipping boy because people like to pretend that they didn’t say what they did say – THEY LIE TO THEMSELVES!

In a discussion about a famous violinist being virtually ignored in a metro station while he played during the rush hour, vile and despicable judgements against parents and working people were made. The following is a response I made to explain why I was so deeply offended by them. To make it easy for the people involved to understand what they were trying to defend, I translated the original comment as follows:-

(For ease, the original comment is bold and the meaning and implications are in italics.)

OK, ******, here is a repeat of *********’s comment and the meaning and implications of what he wrote according to common English usage:-

“That was the whole point, Arthur. NO 1 HAD THE TIME.”
- – - – I think we are agreed at this point and we are probably also agreed that the reason no-one had time was because the rush hour was chosen.
“SMART people MAKE time.”
- – - – This can ONLY be interpreted as that the people in the metro station were NOT SMART because they didn’t make time.
“As an example, I plan my trips so as 2 ALLOW time for the UNEXPECTED.”
- – - – I think we can agree that we all would like to do this but we both know that commuters on the metro have different criteria for time management than long distance hauliers.
“Each 1 of us has the same 24 hrs in 1 day.”
- – - – We can’t argue about that.
“What we DO with those 24 hrs depends on each 1 of us.”
- – - – This also is fairly straight forward.
“If I had a job where 1 minute could COST me my job, I wouldn’t even CONSIDER that job.”
- – - – This is a very plain statement and the implication is that no-one else should consider such a job either. You and I know that commuting is a fairly regular process and commuters can judge the time to get to the platform very precisely to make the most of their day. I know, and you probably do as well, that a one minute delay could mean missing your connection and being half an hour late for work rather than getting in on time – possibly risking your job.
“And any parent who doesn’t have the TIME 2 allow their children to LEARN from their environment has no business BEING a parent.”
- – - This is a gross insult to all parents who regularly travel with their children. How is it possible to say that a parent doesn’t have time JUST BECAUSE, on one occasion, there was something totally unexpected to see just as you arrive at the Metro Station having let your child enjoy and learn from the trip in AND THEN ACCUSE THE PARENT OF NOT BEING WORTHY?
“When I’m enjoying my time off, I don’t even LOOK @ what time it is. I enjoy every day, hour, minute & second. That’s why it’s called “time off” … TIME OFF THE CLOCK.”
- – - – This is a simple denial of the fact that the performance was in rush hour. The aspect of free time or time off is being introduced even though it is totally irrelevant.

This is the first time I have decided to defend myself against unjust accusations but, if you think that ********* said something different (and these are his words) let me know why. That’s why you are allowed to comment!

It is time for social sites to grow up. They are either places where grown up people can share ideas and opinions or they are simply happy, clappy crap retainers to enable sharks to sell slick ideas, conspiracy theories, spam, scam and simple lies. If people are allowed to post very clear and transparent statements and then deny that what they said was what they really did say, is there any wonder so few people get involved in anything that might remotely resemble a discussion or (gasp, gasp) an argument? Has the age of PMA and endemic dissembling really gone so far that writing a comment is akin to filling in a pools coupon – perm any six words from twenty and then accept the most popular interpretation?

I do not court popularity because, nowadays, being popular seems to be more about being walked all over, positive and safely supportive regardless of whatever rubbish is seeking support. In the same way, I do not “like” pictures exposing extreme cruelty to children or animals (what is THAT all about, any way) nor do I simply endorse comments. Surprisingly enough, on social sites, I socialise. I make clear statements that are free from duplicity and am prepared to accept a level of abuse – but ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

Oh, yes, I am bound to get some sanctimonious and self righteous idiots saying that I should just forget this and move on. I am sick and tired of “forgetting and moving on” – is lying such a rewarding occupation for blogging? Is being offensive acceptable behaviour when blogging? Is it my fault that I understand English, understand debate and value the proper use of vocabulary?

You can lie to me all you like – but STOP LYING TO YOURSELVES!

As I trawl through web site after web site looking for inspiration and original thought it becomes patently obvious that my search is in the wrong place! How can thousands of “supposedly” different individuals produce articles that are either totally indistinguishable from each other or obviously spun versions of the supposedly different ones?
Where are the original thinkers of today? Where are the people who are prepared to put themselves in the firing line by daring to hold an opinion of their own AND expressing it?
I’ll tell you where they are.
They are hiding from the stupid.
They are hiding from the moronic.
They are hiding from the illiterate.
They are hiding from the brain dead.
They are hiding from the brain washed.
They are hiding from the gormless who express their ignorance in pointless, Neanderthal grunts.
They are hiding from those who will agree, simply because they think everybody else will.
Original thinkers are no longer sought out in the land of the uneducated because they challenge the “cat sat on the mat” teaching standards that pass as excellence.
Never in the realms of humanity have we seen such a flock of sheeple that now infest (they are too insignificant and timid to inhabit) the countries of the western world.
Renée Descartes, if he came back today could never have coined his famous philosophical statement because there is little evidence that anybody thinks. Maybe he would have to modify it to something like “I conform, therefore I am”, it would certainly be more truthful.
The world of politics has been revolutionised by the brute tolerance of the sheeple. Politicians have no fears of being chastised or even criticised by the people that they are supposed to be supporting and protecting – they have decades of experience that tells them they can do anything they want – but not in election year.
The sheeple have abdicated all personal responsibility and surrendered to the national pandering to minorities. They have allowed themselves to believe that each sheep has exactly the same value as every other sheep. Indeed, they have accepted the principle of “equality” to such a degree that they fear excelling and deliberately down-play their own achievements.
The situation is so bad now that nobody feels free to speak unless in the bosom of their family or among very trusted friends – and even then they will append any suspect statement with “not that I am ———ist”.
While the internet allows some excellence to persist, governments throughout the world are fearful of a revision of individual thought – so fearful that they are attempting to suppress whatever they think could be subversive.
AND THEY THINK EVERYTHING IS SUBVERSIVE BECAUSE THAT IS HOW THEY TOOK CONTROL!
Meanwhile, the sheeple look on and think someone else will do something about it – after all, that rocking motion that they feel is only those in charge repositioning the cargo.

As I have tried to introduce a small measure of reason into several blogs and social sites about the Izquierda Unida propaganda attack against the king, it has finally got through my thick skull that reason is not a prerequisite, nor even a desirable attribute, of blogs and social sites contributors.

The IU attack on the king, together with a six year old photograph, has exposed the root evil of mass hysteria. Despite nothing but rumour and innuendo, king Juan Carlos has been condemned because THAT was the band waggon that everybody wanted to climb upon. No matter what the truth of his situation, nobody will believe that he was not out there with 50mm cannon slaughtering elephants, rhinos and buffalos from dawn to dusk.

Once again, the proliferation of “me too” endorsements of hysterical over-reaction has demonstrated the fact that people love to belong – no matter what they belong to. If they belong to a group of people supporting ill-found propaganda designed to destroy the monarchy, they will not post anything that even remotely resemble a personal opinion. They will look at what others have posted and then personalise their own “ooh, lovely” response.

If they are supporting a group of people fighting against animal abuse, they will look at what others have posted and then personlise their own “ooh, lovely” response while doing nothing to ease the situation. It must be really galling for an animal rescue organisation to publish the pictures and stories of horrendous abuse and suffering to only receive agreements that it was shocking or the poor little animal is so lucky to have been saved.

THEY DO NOTHING!

On the lighter side, there are those people who simply love to post what others have posted on social sites but never seem to create any original posts of their own. This is not necessarily a bad thing but to this Old Coot, it speaks of a generation or two that have been mentally disabled by education systems that, as Tony Blair would have you believe, get better every term. The level of debate in far too many sites is abysmal. Some streams are like the results of two small children arguing – “’tis”, “tint”, “tis”, “tint” etc etc etc.

What has happened to our society that has reduced the vast majority of it’s members to mumbling incoherents?

Why don’t people have their own opinions any more?

Will we soon have buttons on our foreheads, “Like”, “Yes”, “No” and “Maybe?” (Can’t have “Hate”, it might affect someone’s human rights.)

Band waggons are traditionally at the end of a procession of professionals, shouldn’t we be aiming just a little beyond them? Does modern society really want to follow in the dust, faecal smells and flatulance of the oxen in front?

Dog owners will be familiar with the 1,000 yard stare that many dogs exhibit when they simply stop walking and gaze into the distance but the behaviour of my two little gems this afternoon was – err – creepy.

Both Chap and Stanley decided that it was time to sit down and watch something. My video camera was not with me or I would have filmed the synchronised “star-gazing” that they indulged in for about ten minutes. There was no doubt at all that, not only had something caught their attention, but that it was the same something.

My sight is not good but, with two noses pointing at something apparently interesting, I should have been able to spot what had engaged them.

Stanley, who has only recently found his voice, was crooning quietly and Chap was giving out quiet whinges (for want of a better word).

This is not the first time this has happened and I often wonder if dogs can see the ghosts of people and creatures that are “hanging around”. Maybe they can see ancient Roman legions or Moslem soldiers marching through the hills? Maybe, as the purest souls around, they can see angels or other dimensional beings.

Whatever it is they see, this hot afternoon it was a chilly experience.

My current dogs, Chap and Stanley, are as different as chalk and cheese when it comes to walking. Chap likes to pull ahead and to alternate sides – he probably walks at least twice as far as I do as he zig-zags along – while Stanley is more conservative and tends to follow behind me at as slow a pace as I will put up with.

Now that we can walk in the campo with Stanley off the lead, I have noticed that the dogs have exactly the same characteristics in their progress. Chap likes to explore at the extent of his fifteen foot extending lead while Stanley spends a great deal of time examining areas as small as one square foot.

Both dogs are very busy with their noses so I can only assume that they are reading the recent events disclosed to them by the various smells. I must further assume that Chap, with his rapid transit from place to place, is reading only the headlines while Stanley, in his own pedantic fashion, is reading the small print.

I suppose that we must also consider something else following http://www.askoldcoot.info/2012/03/20/are-we-solipsists because if we can create a god with our combined mental energy, could we also create our own heaven?

Is it possible that the devout Norsemen not only created Odin but also Valhalla? Are there immortal Vikings living out eternity in daily battles and over-night recovery? Are the faithful followers of Zeus now living an idyllic eternity in the fields of Elysium?

Do the religions of today have the devotion from their followers that could create an after-life according to their beliefs?

My belief is that there are not enough devoted people to do the solipsist magic. Our extended knowledge of the world and universe around us has denied us the absolute certainty that ancient civilisations seem to have been able to embrace.

Maybe Jesus came to Earth when he did because He knew that the developing sciences were going to be a threat to His own existence as the numbers who believed in him started to fall.

Maybe He came to earth to consolidate the existence that mankind had created for Him?

Maybe mankind brought Jesus to Earth in order to bolster the faith that they could see themselves losing?

There is ample evidence that the religions of today do not have devout followers in great numbers. The Christian religion is so segmented that it is possible there is not enough solipsist power in any segment to maintain a god and other religions, with the possible exception of Islam (even though it, too, is segmented), do not seem to be able to imbue their followers with great passion.

Has our sophistry and science damned us to non-existence by destroying our mental cohesion?

There is a sublime insanity that has infested the world over the past forty to fifty years – the idea that women should be equal to men! Not only has this insanity been allowed to flourish and spread, absolutely no-one has asked a question that is simply begging to be asked:-

“Why have women allowed themselves to be conned into believing that assuming part of the mantle of masculinity makes them equal?”

There seems to be no real reason that women ever thought themselves inferior and yet they allowed militant feminists to convince them that they were. Just a few screeching harridans have denied women their proper place in society and, in consequence, have helped to demolish that society to such a degree that now, nobody has a proper place.

The cost of women’s liberation has been horrendous!

The most damaging cost has been to the structure of the family and the society based upon it. Men have never been capable of taking full responsibility for the care and welfare of their children. A few exceptions might exist but basically, we are a matriarchal society. We have been cared for and nurtured for hundreds of years by women in their proper superior place – at the controls of the family.

The liberation of women removed their hands from the tiller and we have seen society flushed down the tubes as a result.

Once, men were content to work in the belief that they were free agents while women were quietly confident in their own superiority. The ancient drives of hunter gatherer were sublimated by the acts of going to work, earning money and supporting the woman and children in his life. Once women demanded a share of the available work, men found themselves competing in a work-force that had, potentially, doubled (which, of course, has nothing to do with high unemployment rates). They discovered that the structure that had made nations great had been sabotaged so badly that his place in it was no longer clear.

Women, in their desperation to be equal, allowed themselves to be manipulated into accepting much lower wages for the same work and so, taking the legs from under their men.

Some women fooled themselves into thinking that their extra income was a blessing to the family where, in fact, it was simply a curse. Her wages became like a cancer eating away at the self esteem and self confidence of her partner. Every dollar she earned was like a knife in his guts while he smiled and tried to accept that she still needed him.

Equality for women meant lowering themselves from a position of control and influence to one in which they were simply one more bread winner.

Equality for men was an absolute disaster.

After centuries of playing the lord of the manor, he had to try to emulate the superior abilities and attitudes of women. He had to start to take some responsibility for the welfare of his family from a nurturing point of view – something that men are really not suited for in the long term. This unsuitability is now painfully obvious as we watch the new generations becoming more and more stupid, belligerent and self centred. With two wages coming into their homes, the younger generations have seen that they can condition their parents into giving them everything they want by timing their demands at the most propitious moments.

The dragging down of women by their lunatic sisters has caused irreparable damage.

Society is no longer ordered and the men in charge no longer seek the wise counsel of their women as they once used to do.

Now we find that women have so debased themselves that they want to take on another aspect of manhood – the guiltless slaughter of the innocent.

Just as men have always killed, women are now seeking to under-line their equality by insisting upon their own unique form of slaughter – abortion.

Society has paid, and continues to pay, a very high price for dragging women down to the level of men. I fear there is now no hope for the human race. Without women in charge, it is like a great leviathan rampaging in a china shop.
