I have spent my whole life trying to discover the truth about religion.
The many sects and cults would have me believe that there is a general ignorance of who or what created the universe and all that is within it.
People talk about holy books being the inspired word of God (more than one sect makes this claim) and this is something that I can sympathise with because I was inspired to write a short story to give an idea of how reincarnation might work. This story was written at the suggestion of my wife and has never been edited or changed in any way. It gave my wife great comfort as she was very close to dying.
But do I believe it was inspired?
Bluntly, I have absolutely no idea. My search for answers has brought me into conflict with many “believers” but I truly believe they found my questions disturbing. I have spoken to priests, committed Christians, Jaines and Buddhists but none of them could provide answers.
As my own life seems to be racing pell-mell towards the buffers, my search for answers has become a little less of a fixation. Probably this is because my knowledge is now sufficient for me to relax and (not quite) welcome the inevitable.
Last night an idea that has been prodding at my subconscious for a few years finally forced itself to the centre of my being.
We all accept that our DNA strings define the physical side of what we are. We know that the DNA can be manipulated to produced improved or grossly distorted versions of existing life forms.
Does any of us know why DNA exists?
If God created life on Earth, it would stand to reason that he would do it in a similar manner to that described in Genesis.
The existence of DNA tends to reduce the “miracle” of creating living organisms to little more than building a house with Lego bricks so are we the result of the manipulation of millions of paired attributes?
It is fairly certain that at some time in the future the human genome will have been completely analysed and decoded. The genomes of all other life forms would soon follow. When this analysis is complete, will we discover that, in fact, no living creature is very far removed from any other when it comes to counting the number of pairs in the DNA strings? Already there are evil scientists creating monstrous vegetables to infest the Earth but what have they created that we do not know about?
Could it be that the multitheists of the past had a better idea of the “Gods” than we do? Did they really accept that the Gods did play with “Lego bricks” to create life on Earth and that some Gods were better at animals, some better at plants and others better at creating the supporting matrix?
Were the Gods only much greater developed species that were able to manipulate DNA and travel widely through space?
Which “Gods” did they worship?
Did they accept, as I believe, that the “big bang” was not an isolated incident but that, in the vastness of space, there have been millions of “big bangs” and that there are millions of universes that are simply too far away for us to see?
I hope to find out when I die but if this life is all there is, I will not be able to feel disappointed if I don’t.
