As my life trickles through the narrow waist of the egg timer and I look around even more intensely for a meaning to existence, I have been forced to one conclusion – God has a unique sense of humour!
It occurs to me the man was not created in God’s image but was created as a catalyst to speed along the natural decay of the world that was created. God gave man the curiosity that He knew would cause him to eat of the forbidden fruit and so, create the scenario where God (who is jealous and vengeful) would be able to cast him out of His perfect world to exercise his other God-given talent – survival.
Mankind has a unique view of itself and is incapable of accepting culpability for any transgression. Once cast out, mankind proceeded to create a world in which he could survive while vilifying the God of his creation. It did not take mankind long to create his own gods and to imbue them with an aura of sanctity and power. The sanctity was transparently false but the power was discovered to be very real indeed. The fear that mankind had of ceasing to exist at his death made the priests of the false gods very powerful because they could allay the fear by demanding goods and services in return for the gift of eternal life from the gods.
The priesthood grew fantastically wealthy as it fed the fear of mortality to the members of its tribes. Like all wealthy people, though, the priests started to see that some priests were wealthier than others and started to use the faith of their tribes in order to subdue other tribes and take from them the wealth that they envied. Initially this wealth could have been in skins and utensils but, as mankind developed, the wealth became just about anything that was seem as a possession.
It soon became apparent that inter-tribal warfare at the behest of the priests could not be supported if there was only one god so many gods were created. Each tribe had its own gods and each tribe believed that its gods were the most powerful and would protect their fighting men in battle.
Mankind has turned its back on the God who created it, indeed, that God is probably no longer remembered because of the millenia that have passed since mankind was cast out. Over those same millenia, the numbers of gods has fluctuated wildly until, about 2,000 years ago, when the priests realised that having a panoply of gods was counter-productive. It wasn’t always clear to which gods prayers should be addressed.
The monotheists came to the fore.
Now the priests were able to really focus the hatred of their tribes against those whose gods were different. The challenge became “our god can beat your god”. Unfortunately, the making of the claim did not make it so and “evidence” had to be produced to support the claims.
It is not a coincidence that, at about this time, writing was in use for official and business records. The priesthood was quick to seize upon this new medium as a method of proving their claims. Books started to appear (and disappear) and the priests, who were able to write, created magnificent volumes of fact and fantasy in order to convince their tribes that they were telling them the truth and that “faith” was now a demonstrable quality.
To the sound of God laughing in His heaven, the evil of religion organised and driven by cruel and greedy men has been spread throughout the world so that there is now not a single patch that is not tainted with godlessness nor cursed with a greedy and malevolent priesthood. There is probably not a single square yard of land upon which blood has not been shed at the behest of or on the command of the priests.
So, what is God’s joke?
